15/52 Rock Therapy: Lessons from 15 "Rock Royalty"

There are so many things to love about rock and roll. One aspect I've always enjoyed are the cool and fun regal titles that have been given to some of the musical greats. I call them the "Rock Royalty." Who are the rock royals? These are the musicians who defined an era or genre. Their royal titles, such as "King of Rock" or "Queen or Soul", weren't handed down by a bloodline or birthright as old world royalty was, but instead were earned, hard won, and given them by the people: their fans. That's a kind of democratic royalty I can get behind. Further, these royal musicians have lessons we can learn from them. While they each have their own individual story of how they succeeded, they all share the following one lesson:

Greatness is earned, not given
AC/DC sang, "It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll." The great lesson we learn from rock royalty is simply that: In music, as in life, greatness isn't handed out just because you want it. Examine the rock royalty below and think of the long road each took to rise to the top of an often impossible industry. They worked hard, sacrificed and practiced long, long, long hours, usually for years before they "made it" and became "overnight sensations." They will all tell you that none of it happened "overnight."

What is it that you want in life? As you pursue your goals, don't get discouraged. Instead, follow the example of all the greats: work hard, practice long, don't give the critics much heed, and DON'T GIVE UP especially in the face of all the evidence that says you should. Hang in there. You can do this.

I should clarify that some of these royals are obviously related to rock, while others indirectly inspired and fed the genre in its early days. We have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, the fruits of the labors of these royals. Take a moment and enjoy them again now.

PLAYLIST: Listen to them all at once here.

This may be a dream, but I'll say it anyway: I was supposed to be married last year, and I bought a gown. When I meet Nelson Mandela, I shall put on this gown and have the train of it removed and put aside, and kiss the ground that he walks on and then kiss his feet.

Let me explain something about guitar playing. Everyone's got their own character, and that's the thing that's amazed me about guitar playing since the day I first picked it up. Everyone's approach to what can come out of six strings is different from another person, but it's all valid.

Architect of Rock and Roll: Les Paul

THE famous Les Paul electric guitar played by nearly every major rock and roller (and so many others), was invented, of course, by Les Paul, a successful musician in his own right. The Les Paul guitar changed and influenced music like no other. And, ahem, my son's candy blue Les Paul, "Alison", pictured to the right, was handcrafted by his luthier Uncle Eric. It's his pride and joy.

Les' Life Lessons:
ow I need to take a piece of wood and make it sound like the railroad track, but I also had to make it beautiful and lovable so that a person playing it would think of it in terms of his mistress, a bartender, his wife, a good psychiatrist - whatever.
—Les Paul

The audience, they're not professionals. They just love music. It isn't necessary to play over their heads to be admired.
—Les Paul

HOw high the moon

If I have to go around telling everyone how great I am, then there's something wrong with my act.
—Les Paul

I have younger friends who don't work, and they aren't doing so well. My secret is to keep going, keep working.
—Les Paul
